This is the fourth in a series of articles that will highlight compelling reasons why all of us here in the Kern River Valley should shop locally. We will also profile local business owners and what they are doing to assure a successful business in today’s challenging economic climate.
Did you know?
When you shop locally, you help to preserve local character. The Kern River Valley is a unique place to live, as well as to visit. History of this area is both colorful and rich, as those of us who were born here, or who moved here later on know so well. It truly is an area unlike any other. By choosing to support locally owned businesses, you help to maintain that unique character and keep our community strong and vibrant.
Lore Hiney – Lore’s Loft
One of the most frequently heard complaints from women living in the Kern River Valley is that there are so few options when it comes to finding local retailers who sell stylish clothing and footwear.
Well, that is certainly the case no more. Lore Hiney, the owner of Lore’s Loft in Kernville has recently reopened for business at her new location on Tobias St. She describes her store as a “unique clothing boutique where fashion makes a statement.”
When you first enter the store, you are immediately struck by the beautiful transformation of the 1,800-square-foot space. Next shoppers will be pleasantly surprised by the vast array of women’s clothing and accessories in every color, texture and pattern imaginable. A closer examination reveals that Hiney’s claim of having something for every woman, regardless of age or means is indeed true.
Although relatively new to the field of retail, Hiney has always had a love of fashion and an appreciation for quality and style. Having close ties to the Hollywood entertainment industry only served to hone her fashion eye even further.
When she moved to the valley from the Los Angeles area years ago, Hiney discovered that there were few retail fashion options available to local women. Over time, a plan began to form in the back of her mind. What if she could bring a selection of premier clothing lines, as well as one-of-a-kind pieces to the women of the valley? At first it posed a challenge, then it became a mission.
Several years later, Hiney stands in her new space, which was designed and renovated for her by her husband, Bill Hiney. An artistic director for the entertainment industry prior to moving to the valley, Bill Hiney has obviously put his talents to good use in creating the new Lore’s Loft.
Though there are still some changes to be made, Hiney is very pleased with the new boutique. Since her move three weeks ago from her old space at Kernville Antiques and Gifts, the additional 1,300 square feet has allowed her to add many new lines and to greatly expand her inventory.
Just a few of the clothing lines she now carries are Citron, Tianello, Lost River Clothing Company, Surrealist and French Dressing. She also carries a selection of jeans for men and women; Levis and Joe’s Jeans to name just two.
In addition to clothing, Hiney also carries an excellent selection of jewelry by such well known jewelry artists as Paige Wallace, Jackie Jones and local designer, Shirley Davis. Not to be missed are the gorgeous handbags, purses and accessories by designer Mary Frances. Wanting to make the shopping experience more complete, Hiney also has a wide selection of comfortable and stylish Merrell shoes for every occasion.
Hiney’s fashion philosophy transcends that of mere retail. She believes that women choose clothing as a reflection of who they are and where they are in their lives. Sharing her insight, she added, “When shopping for clothes, women often become overwhelmed. They tend to focus on their faults, rather than trying to accentuate their attributes.” Relying on a well developed fashion sense, she is able to gently encourage customers to try on pieces that they may not have considered on their own. “It’s not just about getting out of comfort zones, it’s about expanding them.“ This generally results in customers being pleasantly surprised by a new and flattering look.
Hiney says she absolutely loves what she is doing and finds great fulfillment in helping women reflect their true personalities through fashion. She is quick to add, “Bringing a smile to a woman’s face will always be more important to me than a sale.”
