SUGGESTED INFORMATION & LETTER from a MERCHANT

Subject: Comment on Draft DFG Hatchery & Stocking Program EIR/EIS
Clearinghouse #2008082025

As a merchant of the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce I am concerned with the issue of "Not Stocking Fish in the Kern River" for our citizens and merchants.

Throughout the above document, the concept of "economic impact" is applied to the entire state and/or county. The citizens and merchants of the Kern River Valley view "economic impact" as ‘live or die’ impact. We are almost totally dependent upon tourism to provide the economy necessary for our existence.

Due to the Department of Fish & Game not stocking the Kern River my business has been down by _____________% or $____________. If the Kern River is not stocked in the future, I anticipate my loss next year to be ________________________
The Kern River Chamber of Commerce has determined, by our experiences at various Board of Trade shows, that FISHING is the number one reason for visiting the Kern River Valley. Camping and River Rafting are numbers two and three.

Chapter 7, page 34. "Kern River is the only formerly stocked fishery in Kern County where stocking would be suspended; it would continue at nine other waters, all of which are classified as popular. (Table 5-2) Impact REC7 "Adverse Impact on Recreational Fishing in Kern and Tulare Counties (Less than Significant)". The Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce takes the position that the suspension has, and will continue to have, Extreme Negative Economic Impact on the merchants and citizens in the Kern River Valley.

The fish population in the Kern River has existed for many years. No advantage to the fish population will be achieved by suspending fish stocking. Figure K-1 DFG Trout and Inland Salmon Stocking Evaluation Protocol should return stocking to the Kern River.
For these and other reasons, the Kern River should be removed from the "No Stocking" list.

Sincerely,
