Find a garden of ideas with KRV Garden Group - 2009/07/22 08:36 Find a garden of ideas with KV Garden Group
Ron LaRosa, Special to the Kern Valley Sun

Perhaps the economy with spiking fuel prices and increased costs for food may have some local benefits. Recent national polls indicate that 25 percent of American households plan to grow their own vegetables. Grocers need not worry—folks still appreciate a butcher shop as well as an array of snacks and specialty foods.

So, if you are one of those considering planting your own vegetables and fruit, where do you go to learn about the wonders and enjoyment of home gardening?

County residents need only to call Kern River Valley Garden Group founding president, Shirley Real at 760-379-1129 for directions to the group’s next monthly meeting place, usually a property which might include flower or vegetable gardens, orchards, green houses, compost beds and poultry operations as well as decorative landscaping.

“We encourage residents and their guests to join us each month for a property tour, guest speaker, an information sheet, our lending library and refreshments,” said Real. She added that the organization, which she formed almost two years ago, is not a “club” but a diverse group interested in the outdoors and who appreciate those who garden and care for their landscapes.

This month’s meeting, “A Summer Celebration,” will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 11 at Rim Rock Ranch. To encourage attendees to car pool, some Garden Group members can provide transportation. “We will meet at a convenient, central location,” offered Real.

The ranch property, which Real said has no grazing and is operated with the objectives of land stewardship, features aquatic gardens, native plant landscaping, nest structures, log-filled rock gardens and lichen-covered boughs. “The owner has made every effort to integrate the homestead with the undisturbed acreage, while conserving water, attracting diverse wildlife and improving soil fertility,” she explained.

A presentation by the chief gardener of a local nursery is scheduled for the meeting which begins with a narrated tour, and for this particular event, concludes a ‘pot-luck’ lunch.
